- A licensed US clinician must assess you and write a prescription. Anyone selling without one is a red flag.
- Labels cover adults with obesity, or overweight plus a weight-related condition. A clinician decides if you qualify.
- Expect two costs: the telehealth service, and the medicine.
- Lilly and Novo Nordisk both list independent telehealth providers on their sites.
- Check any pharmacy is state-licensed. Avoid anything "research use only".
How online prescribing works
Telehealth services connect you with a licensed US clinician online. The steps vary by provider, but a legitimate service will always involve:
- A health assessment
Usually a questionnaire about your health, medicines and history, sometimes with a video or phone visit. Some providers ask for lab tests.
- A clinician's decision
A licensed prescriber reviews your information and decides whether a medicine is appropriate, and which one. They can say no.
- A prescription sent to a pharmacy
The medicine is dispensed by a licensed pharmacy, which may be a local pharmacy, a mail-order pharmacy or a manufacturer program such as LillyDirect or NovoCare Pharmacy.
- Follow-up
Ongoing check-ins as your dose changes and to manage side effects.
If you already have a prescription from your own doctor, you may not need telehealth at all. NovoCare Pharmacy, for example, lets people with a prescription for Wegovy or Ozempic pay out of pocket for home delivery.[5]
Who the labels cover
The FDA-approved labels for Zepbound, Wegovy and Foundayo cover weight management in adults with obesity, or in adults with overweight who also have at least one weight-related condition.[1, 2, 3] The clinical trials behind these labels enrolled adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or 27 to under 30 with a weight-related condition.[1, 3]
Some labels cover other uses too:
- Zepbound is also approved for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.[1]
- Wegovy is also approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight, and the injection for a form of liver disease (MASH). Wegovy injection is also approved for some patients aged 12 and older.[2]
Whether a medicine is right for you, and which one, is a clinician's decision. Your insurance may also have its own rules for coverage. Our free eligibility checker compares your answers with the labels and shows the cheapest official way to pay.
Where to find a licensed provider
Both manufacturers list independent telehealth providers on their own websites, while making clear they do not endorse them:
- LillyDirect (for Zepbound and Foundayo) lists independent telehealth providers alongside home delivery of Lilly medicines through third-party pharmacy partners.[4]
- Novo Nordisk (for Wegovy) lists telehealth providers including 9amHealth, eMed, FormHealth, KnownWell, LifeMD, Ro, Sesame and WeightWatchers.[6]
These lists are a sensible starting point if you want the branded, FDA-approved medicine. Some providers also offer compounded versions, which are not FDA-approved. Our guide to compounded GLP-1s explains the difference and how to check a provider.
What it costs
For current medicine prices from the makers, by dose, see our GLP-1 price checker.
Most online services charge in two parts:
- The service: a per-visit fee or a monthly membership. As one example, Ro lists a $39 first month (refunded if you are not eligible), then $74 to $149 a month depending on the plan.[7] Others bundle in more: GoodLife Health's membership includes a lab panel every 90 days and monthly check-ins (our review).[8]
- The medicine: charged separately, through your insurance or at a self-pay price. Manufacturer self-pay prices are in our Zepbound and Wegovy and Ozempicsavings guides.[7]
Before you sign up, check what the membership includes, whether it renews automatically, and how to cancel.
Staying safe: pharmacies and red flags
Signs of a safe online pharmacy
The FDA says a safe online pharmacy:[9]
- always requires a prescription from a licensed prescriber;
- is licensed by a state board of pharmacy;
- has a physical US address and phone number;
- has a licensed pharmacist available to answer questions.
How to check
- Look the pharmacy up in your state board of pharmacy's license database. The FDA links to every state's lookup, and says not to use a pharmacy that is not listed.[10]
- Use NABP's Safe Site Search. A website ending in .pharmacy has been accredited by NABP, and that domain cannot be faked.[11]
Red flags
- No prescription needed, or prices that seem too good to be true.[9]
- Products labeled "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption".[12]
- "Generic" semaglutide or tirzepatide sold as if it were Wegovy or Zepbound. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and counterfeits may contain the wrong ingredient, too much, too little or none.[12]
Checklist before you sign up
- Is a licensed US clinician assessing you?
Not just a checkout form.
- Which medicine will you get?
Check it is the FDA-approved brand (Zepbound, Wegovy, Foundayo and so on), not a compounded version, unless you and your prescriber have chosen that knowingly.
- Which pharmacy dispenses it?
Check it is state-licensed.
- What are the total monthly costs?
Service fee plus medicine, and whether your insurance or a savings program applies.
- How do you cancel?
Read the membership terms first.
Common questions
Can I get Zepbound or Wegovy prescribed online?
Yes. Licensed US telehealth providers can assess you and, if a medicine is appropriate, prescribe it. Both Lilly and Novo Nordisk list independent telehealth providers on their own websites. A clinician decides whether a medicine is right for you.
Who qualifies for a GLP-1 weight loss medicine?
The labels for Zepbound, Wegovy and Foundayo cover adults with obesity, or adults with overweight who also have at least one weight-related condition. The clinical trials behind them enrolled adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 to under 30 with a weight-related condition. A prescriber makes the final call.
How much does an online GLP-1 prescription cost?
Usually two separate costs: the telehealth service (a visit fee or monthly membership) and the medicine itself. For example, Ro lists a membership of $74 to $149 a month, with medication charged separately. Manufacturer self-pay prices for the medicines are in our savings guides.
Is it safe to buy semaglutide or tirzepatide online without a prescription?
No. The FDA says a safe online pharmacy always requires a prescription, and warns about products labeled "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption". Counterfeit products may contain the wrong ingredient, too much, too little or none.
How do I check an online pharmacy is legitimate?
Check it is licensed with a state board of pharmacy (the FDA links to every state lookup), look for a physical US address and a licensed pharmacist you can contact, and check NABP's Safe Site Search. Websites ending in .pharmacy have been accredited by NABP.
