- Needles are not included. You need KwikPen-compatible pen needles.
- Lilly does not name a brand or size. Ask your pharmacist which compatible needles to buy.
- Use a new needle for every injection.
- Never store the pen with a needle on. Take it off straight after injecting.
- Do not move leftover medicine into a syringe.
Which needles to use
Lilly lists a "KwikPen-compatible Pen Needle (not included)" among the supplies you need.[1] The instructions do not name a particular brand, length or gauge, so check the box or ask the pharmacist to confirm the needles are compatible with the KwikPen.
Your pharmacist can recommend a compatible needle. If your pharmacy or insurance needs a prescription for pen needles, ask your prescriber to add them.
Where to get them
- Any pharmacy that stocks KwikPen-compatible pen needles.
- With a LillyDirect order: Lilly's pharmacy partner sells an injection supply and pen needle kit with your order for a small additional fee.[2]
Each KwikPen holds 4 weekly doses, so you need at least 4 pen needles for each pen.[1]
Attaching a needle
- Use a new needle
Always use a new pen needle for each injection, to help prevent infections and blocked needles.[1]
- Push and twist
Push the capped pen needle straight onto the pen and twist it on until it is tight.[1]
- Prime before each dose
The instructions include a priming step with each new needle. A drop at the needle tip shows it worked. Our KwikPen guide walks through it.[1]
Removing and disposing
- Recap carefully
After injecting, carefully replace the outer needle shield.[1]
- Unscrew and dispose
Unscrew the capped needle and put it in a sharps container.[1]
- Cap the pen
Put the pen cap back on. Do not store the pen with a needle attached: it can leak, block the needle or let air into the pen.[1]
What not to do
- Do not reuse a pen needle.[1]
- Do not try to split a dose. The KwikPen gives 4 fixed doses and is not designed for smaller ones.[3]
- Do not inject leftover medicine after the 4 doses, and do not transfer it into a syringe.[4]
